Sundog

On Thursday, Walt was shoveling the massive amounts of snow off my mom/grandparents' deck and poked his head in to tell us that he'd seen something he'd never seen before: a snow rainbow! We poked our heads out, thought it was cool, took quick pics while FREEZING, and didn't think much more about it.

Then on Friday, I read a post Michelle posted the night before about sun dogs. After seeing the pics referenced on her post, I knew that was what we took pictures of!

Per Wikipedia, Sundogs are formed by plate shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds or - during very cold weather - by ice crystals called diamond dust drifting in the air at low level.
