2008 Letter

We didn't do a Christmas newsletter this year because it feels like we don't have a lot to share. Things are pretty much the same in our lives: no kids, no new pets. The only thing that's changed is our jobs and zip code!

We started the year with me (Sarah) pursuing nursing school, completing a mini-mester last December and starting classes in January but then realizing it wasn't right. Shortly after deciding to not pursue nursing school further, Walt received many opportunities for applying for promotions and in February, he applied for two promotions. (same job, two different parts of the country) In March, we found out that he got it but we had to wait and in August, we were finally given the opportunity to move and for Walt to begin his new job. We've been waiting a long time for many things and this year truly showed us to just not plan or anticipate when or what will happen.

We LOVE living in Arizona! We were happy to leave Texas (not the people but the state) and immediately felt more comfortable in Phoenix. In our opinion, Phoenix feels like a cross between California and the Midwest. I can't accurately describe it but you have palm trees and great weather which make me think of California plus you have lots of Midwesterners here. When we wear our Husker shirts, we get stopped a lot by former Nebraskans! It's awesome! (We have also found a lot of Steeler fans! We also get asked if we moved here from Pittsburgh.)

The first three months we were here, I met someone from Omaha (or Nebraska) every week: our realtor, our home inspector, the receptionist at the doctor's office, etc. I told our friend, Traci, about it and when she came in October, we went to Michaels and the cashier knew her zip code was the Omaha area because she used to live in Omaha! That made me giggle that she saw my discovery of Nebraskans in action!

Walt's new job is busy and the hardest he's had but he's adjusting rather well. He is still with the Department of Veterans Affairs and his new title is "Assistant Officer of Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment" or "#2" as he has been nicknamed by the office. (The officer is nicknamed "Dr. Evil" so "#2" was a natural choice for Walt.) His office oversees the entire state of Arizona for helping disabled veterans get back to work.

I am still staying home for now. It's been 7 months since I quit and the time has been quite useful while we prepared to move from Texas, got established in Arizona while we living in a furnished apartment for 3 months, moved into our home on Veteran's Day (11/11/08), and through the holidays. Staying home without kids probably won't last forever so I am savoring every day that I can stay home and take care of Walt, Grissom (our cat), and our house. I've enjoyed having the time to cook more.

For the cat enthusiasts, Grissom has adapted to the changes rather well. He had no problem in the apartment and became comfortable in the house immediately. I think he loves all the extra room in the house but misses all the people and dog watching in the apartment. He learned to open doors in the apartment but those skills weren't brought over to the house. He traveled with us from Dallas to Omaha for Thanksgiving '07 and then in August '08 for my uncle's funeral. A week later, when we drove from Dallas to Phoenix, he was a trooper on the 2-day, 16-hour drive. On day two, about 90 minutes outside of Phoenix, he started communicating his displeasure for being in a carrier so long. Thankfully, that only lasted about 5 minutes.

On the church front, it's been challenging to find the right fit. We heard a statistic that only 14% of people in Phoenix attend church. As the 5th largest city in the nation, that's a very small number. We have found churches that don't have groups in their 30s with young families or they are very rigid in how many are allowed in groups so we've been frequently placed in misc groups with ages 16-65. We found a great group at one church but the drive to church was a bit far so we've started going to a sister church of theirs only 3 miles from our house. There are about 1700 in attendance and we have found two groups in our age range to visit for small group fellowship. (They are currently on a break with the holidays.) We can't wait to try them out soon! We have started volunteering and serving in the meantime and it feels good to start meeting people.

We've been thankful for our friends that have visited us! Helen, Ed, and Jim came to Dallas in May the week of my 30th Birthday and we had a lot of fun. Traci came to visit us in October and we had fun in Phoenix and going to the Grand Canyon. We unexpectedly got to see Jenn and the girls this month when their Phoenix to Omaha leg of their flight got cancelled due to bad weather in Omaha! We didn't get an Omaha trip in as far as visiting. We went in August for a couple days the week before we moved for a funeral. We enjoyed going to Mississippi Memorial Day weekend to see family. We traveled to St. Pete for a business conference for Walt and then came to Phoenix on an exploratory trip. Our only vacation this year was a weekend trip to San Diego in October and we had a great time! We hope to go back soon as it is only a 5-hour drive!

We are looking forward to 2009! While 2008 has not had much going on, we are thankful for the Lord's provision in our lives.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Yay! It's Christmas Eve!! WOHOO! I have planned to do nothing strenuous today and I'm excited...my baking is done, laundry is all caught up, and we're going to relax today, go to church tonight and look at Christmas lights afterwards!

It's been raining here so it's not been good for pictures. (I'll see what I can get this weekend.)

Back to a previous post, in my opinion, a White Christmas is Christmas Day when it's snowing, not just snow on the ground.

Last but not least, I have figured out what my favorite Classic Christmas song is. (Here's a hint...it's not White Christmas!) It is The Christmas Song! (AKA "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire")

Hoping your festivities are enjoyable!

MIA

Sorry I've been MIA the last few days.

Our friend, Jenn, and her two girls got stuck in Phoenix on their way home from California (flights were canceled arriving in Omaha) so we picked them up on Thursday night and then got them back to the airport on Friday morning so they could fly to KC and Tony could pick them up and drive them back to Omaha.

Friday, I took a nap and relaxed. Friday night, I got the best night's sleep I had in a long time. Saturday morning, I woke up with a weird stomach and it quickly turned into a bug that took about 24 hours to get rid of. I'm still feeling some effects but at least able to function! I haven't been able to get some of the pics I wanted for my Ten Days of Christmas due to these unforeseen circumstances so I will try to tonight!

Today, I'm getting the rest of our grocery shopping for the weekend...a rather small list so it's encouraging that my bargain shopping and pantry/freezer stocking is paying off! YAY! I'm also making up my chocolate chip cookie dough today because I love to have the dough fully chilled for when I make cookies. (tomorrow) For some reason, I've found it really helps with the way we prefer our cookies...soft and moist!

THREE DAYS until Christmas! WOW!

Ten Days of Christmas #6

As I was copying and pasting the below song to share, I thought of a good #6 that is a two parter. (I was going to take some pics last night but got sidelined...more details on that later)

1) Have you ever skipped a holiday tradition and gone on vacation during Christmas or Thanksgiving?

We have never done this but we have had times where we've stayed home alone on Christmas or Thanksgiving. It's ironic because it's nice to look forward to relaxing and taking it easy during all the rush but then when it comes and it's quiet (& relaxing), it feels weird!

2) What is your definition of a White Christmas? A) Snow on the ground or B) Snowing on Christmas.

Walt and I have had many discussions about this! I'll reveal my definition in a few days.

*****************************
Since we are staying in Phoenix for Christmas, I'll leave you with this little diddy.

(To the tune of the "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" song)

Palm trees wave, are you listenin'?
In the pool, water's glistenin'...
A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight
Livin' in a Phoenix Wonderland!

Gone away is the blizzard,
Here to stay is the lizard,
A warm sunny day, we like it that way,
Livin' in a Phoenix Wonderland!

In the desert we will have a picnic,
Cactus, sand and rattlesnakes and sun...
Christmas dinner is an old tradition,
It's pinto beans and tacos by the ton.

Later on we'll perspire,
Temperatures rise even higher...
A warm sunny day, we like it that way,
Livin' in a Phoenix Wonderland!

Ten Days of Christmas #7

Christmas movies!

What is your favorite Christmas movie?

Okay, Christmas movies are like Christmas songs for me...I have never thought about a favorite. I certainly don't have a favorite classic movie but I do love National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Even typing the title makes me giggle!

Last year at the beginning of December, we searched the satellite DVR for various movies to record and then we played a few while we hosted Christmas last year. It was funny because I was sitting there staring at Rusty and thinking to myself, "that looks like Leonard on The Big Bang Theory" but then shaking it off because there was 17 year gap from the then first season of The Big Bang Theory and Christmas Vacation which was filmed in 1989! So I IMDB'd Christmas Vacation and was excited to see Johnny Galecki was Rusty and when you clicked on his link...it was Leonard from The Big Bang Theory!

Time to go search the DVR!

Ten Days of Christmas #8

Christmas food!

This is the last caloric topic, I promise! What dish do you look forward to on Christmas Day? (or Christmas Eve if your family does a bigger celebration then) It could be a side or the main event.

Our family has done it differently over the years but normally, we have a dinner on Christmas Eve, go to church, and then Christmas morning, we have a big early brunch on Christmas morning and open presents. Then we'll have dinner later on but Christmas dwindles down after brunch and presents. With that being said, I love our family's breakfast strata. It has bread, eggs, cheese, ham, and a little seasoning. YUMMY! I miss that when I'm not in Omaha for Christmas.

As far as dinner dishes, I don't have one that I think about before Christmas day...just the strata!!

Check back tomorrow!

(Amy, I have decorations coming up and post pics then! :) I've been lazy about taking pics!)

Ten Days of Christmas #9

Christmas beverages!

What is your favorite beverage at Christmas? (or wintertime) It seems like I'm in a minority but I LOVE eggnog! I don't know how I got addicted to it...well, maybe because my mom loves it too and we had it every year growing up. I also love peppermint hot chocolate. YUM! Walt doesn't like either so I make him hot chocolate and then add some peppermint extract to mine.

For a drink that's easier on my waistline, I have recently started enjoying Celestial Seasonings Peppermint herbal tea. The other flavors from Celestial Seasonings have always tasted too much like tea but this is just pure peppermint leaves so it's a light peppermint taste. What makes them even better is I got them for free at our Kroger-affilliate! (They were on sale for $1 and I had coupons that doubled up to $1 off!)

Check back tomorrow!

Ten Days of Christmas #10

I have thought of a random 10 categories to discuss for the 10 days left until Christmas! I am happy to announce that I have realized what my favorite song is and will share on Christmas Eve! Until then, what is your favorite Christmas cookie? If you don't have one, what is the dessert you look forward to at Christmas?

Growing up, we didn't have pies for Christmas but we had tons of Christmas cookies and chocolate candies that my mom and Grandma made. Grandma would make tons to make plates to give her friends and neighbors and there would be tons to take home with me during my college years. I always looked forward to my mom's sugar cookies...YUM! They are like no other sugar cookies.

Since I can't come close to duplicating their deliciousness, my favorite treat I look forward to making at Christmas is snickerdoodles! I know they are a year-round cookie but there is something about them at Christmas...especially with cocoa! Last year, I made several types of cookies because I was excited to host Christmas for Walt's family. This year with just the two of us, I'm making chocolate chip cookies and snickerdoodles. I wasn't going to make any at all but we signed up to bring cookies on Christmas Day for an outreach to the community so I'll make a few extra for us on our 4 day weekend!

Check back tomorrow for the next question!

The Day after Christmas

We are so excited! There have been rumors for weeks but today it was made official. The President has given all federal government employees the day after Christmas off with pay so Walt gets a four-day weekend in two weeks! Praise the Lord! We're staying home but looking forward to a relaxing long weekend!

Happy Birthday, Grissom!

Grissom is 3 today! We can hardly believe it. We first saw him when he was a week old and looked like a little rat. Walt wasn't impressed but by 3-4 weeks old when Grissom started running around and playing, Walt was hooked.

I didn't want a pet. I was quite happy with our non-pet lifestyle especially with our love of travel and traveling to visit both sides of our family. Plus I was confident that we'd have kids soon and that would be more than enough to keep us busy! Well, we went ahead and got Grissom from our friends, Larry and Cindy. I didn't know how it would work out because I have cat allergies so I told them we'd try it for a month. Amazingly, I had no allergic reaction to Grissom and we both fell in love with him. We'll never forget the night we got him. Grissom was just under 8 weeks old with a stocky little body and stubby legs. Walt opened up a pint of Blue Bell ice cream and Grissom crawled onto his lap, stood up and put his paw on the side of the pint as if to say, "can I have some?" So precious!

While I know most people could care less about their pet's birthday especially since they are busy with kids but when you can't have kids, a sweet furry friend that wants to snuggle with you sure helps! When I've had a bad day, Grissom tries to comfort me and he never ceases to make us laugh every day. He's always plotting something. We believe and have been told by friends and family that Grissom must thinks he's a human. It's hilarious to watch his reactions. He's our little buddy and we're very thankful for him.

Thank you Lord for this little guy. While we can't have children to take care of, we find joy and comfort in taking care of him.

What is your favorite Christmas song?

I have never been able to answer that question. I always say, "there's too many good ones" or "I kind of like them all" referring to the Office Space quote. I love the Mariah Carey song I mentioned in an earlier post but that's not a classic Christmas song. For some reason, this year it bothers me that I don't know so I have made it my mission to officially decide on my favorite Christmas song. I've been looking online and I'm pulling out the massive stack of Christmas CDs I own (I really do like them all!) and I am going to pick one and post it on Christmas Eve!

Stay tuned!

In the meantime, tell me your favorite Christmas song or any suggestions for me to ponder.

Riggin' up the Lights!

Our 4-day weekend was good. Thanksgiving was good over at Walt's boss' family's house. After dinner, we went to the Phoenix Zoo's Zoolights. It was really pretty and great weather for walking around for about an hour. Then we got a huge downpour! A little surprise in the desert! The rainy weather for a couple days made Thanksgiving feel more fall/wintery so that was nice.

The day after Thanksgiving, Walt caught a cold and we were slow going this weekend. We relaxed and didn't get everything up and decorated. I was so hopeful that I wouldn't catch his cold but no such luck. I'm still struggling a bit but hope to better by tomorrow!

Last year, I hit the jackpot on outdoor decorations after Christmas so everyday, I've been putting something up. Sunday, some big snowflakes on a string on our railing across our porch. Mondays, a string of penguins on stakes. Today, hopefully these little white swirly Christmas trees. We've been putting off the actual lights...not as much fun to hang! We have our Christmas tree up and lit at night in the front of the house so that accents the outside stuff. I love Christmas stuff and our street is really getting into it. Every night an additional house is decorated!

Bring on Christmas!

May today be blessed with feasting on the goodness of God!

If Christmas could be Thanksgiving...

I'm itching to change my blog layout to a Christmas theme but I vowed to not do it until Friday. I love Christmas and all the decorating that goes with it but I think by doing that, I'm blowing past Thanksgiving, a holiday that of all holidays shouldn't be blown off. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it's about being around family and loved ones and good food that you splurge on once per year. It's about reflecting on what's going good in your life even when you can count several things that aren't. Thanksgiving isn't about lots and lots of presents and wondering who to give a present to or rather, who you feel obligated to give a present to.

I love the Christmas decorating, lights, baking, and music...just not the commercialism of trying to keep up with the Jones. So to stay true to honoring Thanksgiving, I'm waiting until Friday to spring Christmas on my life! :)

Friday, Walt and I are doing our tradition of putting up the Christmas tree and decorations while drinking hot chocolate. He's a good sport and always asks if we can play Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" because he knows it's my favorite fun song at Christmas! All this will be worked around watching the Husker game, of course! (1:30pm our time)

Dr Pepper to deliver on its free soda promise!

LOS ANGELES – Dr Pepper is making good on its promise of free soda now that the release of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" is a reality. The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in America if the album dropped in 2008. "Chinese Democracy," infamously delayed since recording began in 1994, goes on sale Sunday.

"We never thought this day would come," Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's vice president of marketing, said in a statement. "But now that it's here, all we can say is: The Dr Pepper's on us."

Beginning Sunday at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr Pepper's Web site. They'll be honored until Feb. 28.

Dr Pepper is owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc.

Life in the slow lane

No, I'm not talking about the more advanced age demographic that is prevelant in Arizona. I'm talking about me. For the last two weeks, I have had three different ailments that at their worst have left me flat on my back. (neck, then abdominals, then lower back) God, if you're trying to get my attention, I'm all yours!

It's been a struggle because the last couple weeks, we closed on our house and I'm trying to do as much as I can during the day to clean out the old apartment and unpack all of our stuff from storage. When one ailment leaves, another one pops up a couple days later. Thankfully, I am going to the chiropractor and he is helping with them!

If you could pray for me, I'd appreciate it...I feel like I'm not getting much done and every morning I have visions of what room(s) I could have completely put together. Then I go to pick something up and realize that if I get one box unpacked, I'm doing good.

This afternoon, I made about 10 trips down to the parking lot carrying everything that was less than 5 pounds out to the car but was bummed to leave 6 totes in the apartment. At least they are all packed up I just need Walt to bring them down to the car.

Time to go ice the back!

So glad it's Friday!

I'm so ready for the weekend! We don't have anything exciting planned but to maybe find the iron by Sunday night so I can iron Walt's clothes! Our weekend seems busy but it's mundane stuff or stuff we've been putting off like going to the 3.5 hour meeting at church for new attendees who are interested in finding out more about the church.

How long has it been since you went to a slumber party?

It has been a busy week!

As you know, we closed on the house on Wednesday and are waiting until Tuesday to get our belongings. Having known this in advance, we decided to have a slumber party at the house this weekend! We were going to do it on Friday night and sleep in but I had a monthly Girls of Surprise game night with some new friends from our new church! So Saturday night, we went to the new house and baked a Papa Murphy's pizza (a take-and-bake pizza chain) and indulged in some pumpkin pie ice cream! It was delicious! We brought over air mattresses and bedding and had a great time! It was actually very comfortable as the beds at the corporate apartment aren't very cozy! I could have laid there all morning thinking about all the future memories we look forward to having in our new home!

I don't have any pictures...I was doing so good with the two previous posts!

Ed was here!

Right on the heels of some Nebraska love with Traci's visit, we were excited to find out that our friend, Ed, was going to be in the Phoenix area on business! We met up with him on Thursday night for some Mexican. It was also a wonderful night because it was Ed's 40th birthday! (Ed is Helen's husband if you're trying to place the association...Helen and Ed came with Jim and visited us in Texas back in May.) It was great to have dinner and a little time afterward in his hotel suite to visit!

Here are some pics. We went to Abuelo's which we had in Dallas. I love the decor inside. It's decorated and lit like an outdoor cafe in the daytime even at night. As you can see, Ed is a great sport with pics as Helen is quite the stalker, I mean photographer! Walt and I told Ed that we were sad for him that he couldn't spend his 40th with his wife so to make it seem more like Helen was there, I brought my camera and would take several pictures during dinner. That got a laugh and a witty comeback that I'd have to pick food off his plate to really make it feel like Helen was here! We played some jokes on Helen with the photos which she loved.

The Birthday Boy!

Grand Canyon

Last weekend, our friend Traci, from Nebraska, came to visit. We had a lot of fun in Scottsdale and then the next day, Walt took the day off and the three of us went to the Grand Canyon and drove through Sedona on the way up and Flagstaff on the way down. When we had dinner down at a great Mexican restaurant in Flagstaff, the waiter bid us farewell with "have a safe drive down the hill." I was the driver that day and thought what? We had not come up the main interstate that connects Flagstaff and Phoenix. We took some side highways and gentle climbs up the mountains to pass through Sedona. I figured I-17 would be smoother and more level. I was wrong! It didn't help that it was at night but I got so scared driving down "the hill" that after an hour and a half (I think), I exited and had Walt drive the rest of the way! We spent the rest of the weekend relaxing. It was fun!

Here are some pics from the weekend:

Home Sweet Home!

It was very rushed the last couple of days but we closed on our house late yesterday afternoon! We then rushed back up to Surprise fairly easy thanks to the HOV lanes! We got to the model home office with an hour to spare and got our keys. We went and visited the house last night and can't wait for our belongings to be delivered on Tuesday! We have a few things being touched up so are waiting a day or two to take anything from the apartment over there. I can't wait!

This week has been fairly busy so I haven't had time to post much. I will post later on last weekend's fun!

My Senator

Last night, I was very moved by Senator McCain's concession speech knowing that he was giving it only 25 miles from where I was sitting. This morning while reflecting on it, I felt proud to be a Phoenician and an Arizonian. I am proud to call Senator McCain my senator.

A Respectful Choice

It goes without saying that I am disappointed in the results of last night. I want to say that unlike so many Americans have done to President Bush, I am going to respect the authority and position of the man God has placed in charge of our country. Not because I agree with him but because he will be our leader. We need to remember that.

To those of you with children, I petition that you raise your children in a way that is respectful of our President. Whether your children were planned or surprises, you have been given the responsibility to model respect for authority to your children. This will be a foundation for them respecting federal and local governments, law enforcement, teachers, and so much more.

For some reason, the last few months, I have been thinking about a particular age of Americans: those 16-24. Why? Because too many of them have spent the last 8 years of their lives hearing their parents, family, the media, and other adults berate the President in a way that will shape the rest of their lives. For them to hear opinions that President Bush is a moron, idiot, or boob will no doubt cause problems in society on national and local levels. It is unprecedented to release a movie about a standing president yet it shows concrete evidence of the lack of respect in society.

I was 14-22 when President Clinton was in office. I did not disrespect him the way I hear so many young and old disrespect our current president. There were disagreements about his actions but such disgraceful names were not used. It wasn't because he was better, it was because he was better respected so let's do the same for President-Elect Obama.

It saddens me that so many who voted for President-Elect Obama do not know the implications of their actions. They do not know that some of the initiatives that he is for could affect the Christian community. While he may mean no harm, there are plenty of individuals that do and they will twist legislation, if passed, to make a huge impact on our religious freedom. Trust me, abortion could be the least of our issues.

It will be interesting to watch 1, 2 or 3 years from now...will those Obama voters who become dissatisfied with some of the decisions President-Elect Obama makes or promises he may not keep still be respectful of their chosen leader or will they sing a different tune because respect is no longer important in society? We shall find out.

Weekend Update

This weekend has been fun. We had lot of coupons for free dinners and ice cream as Walt's gift, we've been splurging this weekend. Friday night, we went to a new-to-us place close to our house called Maui Grille that prides itself on Hawaiian cuisine. We got Walt's meal completely free for his birthday as well as a dessert because we mentioned an ad we saw. Saturday, we went to Red Robin for a tradition since they give you a free burger for your birthday. Saturday night, we went to Walt's boss' house and had a great time with him, his wife, and one of their grown daughter's and her boyfriend. It was a wonderful time and she made the best twice-baked potatoes EVER! YUM! After church today, we went to Red Lobster for Walt to enjoy Endless Shrimp. (This was going to be his birthday meal but the boss was planning to invite us over for dinner before he knew it was Walt's birthday!) We had a birthday coupon for Red Lobster but it wasn't accepted because of the Endless Shrimp special...that's okay!

For this week, Monday, our TX house is officially off our hands! We sign the closing papers sometime this week for our new house and close with funds a few days afterwards. (We have our storage crate being delivered 11/11 since Walt has Veteran's Day off.) Wednesday, our friend Traci, is coming to Phoenix and we're very excited about that! Friday, Walt is taking the day off of work and the three of us are going to the Grand Canyon! It's about a 4-hour drive from us and we have a couple stops that will make the road trip even more fun!

Vacation time!

Although the weather is still in the 90s, we enjoyed some great chili tonight! YUMMY! I am loving staying home and cooking chili was fun yesterday. I let it simmer for awhile and then we ate it tonight...the great flavor set in overnight! I knew Walt loved chili so I surprised him! He was so happy!

We're looking forward to CSI premiering tonight...only 30 more minutes for us!

Tomorrow, we're heading to our first vacation since last October! (a work conference in St. Pete and checking out Phoenix in July don't count!) We're heading to San Diego for 3 nights thanks to Columbus Day weekend! We know there is tons to do in San Diego but we are going to take it easy and starting with the zoo one day and then relaxing on the beach the next. San Diego is only a 5 hour drive from us so we hope to go 1-2 times/year and do something new each time!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Time Change

Sorry it's been awhile! No news is good news. We've just been busy doing various stuff and enjoying our free time. The only thing that is frustrating is the time change for us. Our bodies are used to moving 2 hours back but our family and friends are still 2-3 hours ahead of us! I keep mostly to email and Facebook as I find myself wanting to pick up the phone at inopportune times! After Ive done everything for the day and dinner is done and cleaned up, I settle down at 8pm and presto, it's 10p or 11p where everyone else lives!! UGH! Or I call while Walt's on his way home and it's someone's dinner hour! Or someone calls during our dinner! It's amazing how hard it is and I shouldn't complain...it's just an adjustment, right?

At least when the time changes in 4 weeks, it will be better. Arizona doesn't observe daylight savings so we stay the same time year-round. We just have to be mindful of everyone else. We are technically Mountain time zone but since we don't fall back/spring ahead like the Mountain time zone, we are in Pacific time 8 months of the year (now) and Mountain time 4 months of the year. So that will make us feel a little better when we are only one hour behind Central!

If you forget how many hours we are behind you, just go with 2 hours and you'll be safe. We've gotten calls at 6:15am from the Central time zone! "Oops" is a common response to my groggy raspy "Hello?"

Box Office Estimates

I forgot to post this last night.

The weekend's box office estimates are posted and Fireproof is #4 with $6.5 million with 839 theaters!! YAY! This is fabulous! To put it in perspective how well it did, Nights in Rodanthe (a Nicholas Sparks book) was in 3.5 times the amount of theaters but only made double that amount! ($13.5 million) Also, Facing the Giants made $10 million cumulatively so this is great for Fireproof!

This great opening weekend should keep the movie in theaters a little longer to spread the message!!!

My plan to go on Friday got sidelined but I was thankful I saw it on 9/3! Share your thoughts about the movie if you have seen it!

More about my lovely candle!

I've kept the tin for a little while so I could look up the website for the Jamaican candle. I'm not trying to solicit this to anyone but posting this more as a means to keep it somewhere for my own info! (I'm also shamelessly inhaling the fragrance that is left in the tin!)

Here's the website: http://www.starfishoils.com/

My candle is under Caribbean Candles- the Littler Travel Candle - Sweet Jamaica. I don't remember paying that much but then again I was there locally and it was 4.5 years ago! (That big pillar one is tempting to get for 70 hours of yummy aroma!)

YAY! Here's a picture of it!

Don't wait too long.

You've probably read those forwards in years past about enjoying things now like your good china and other special things and not letting them sit in drawers.

Walt was out of town and while I don't have many of our personal things here (they are in storage until November), I have all of our candles. (As you can deduce, candles don't do well in storage in the desert!) It's quite a big box and I've enjoyed the delicious scents while also being excited to get rid of some that had only half or a third left of the wax...I'm on a decluttering kick!

Somehow, one of those emails from years past floated into my mind and I pulled out a little candle in a tin that had pretty cellophane wrapping like a gift. This particular candle was purchased in Jamaica during our first anniversary trip in April 2004.

I had never opened it for two reasons: 1) the sentimental value and 2) I wasn't convinced it was a quality-scented candle. (I love Home Interior candles and am spoiled by their quality.) I opened the cellophane with hesitance because how would this foreign candle that was 4.5 years old smell? I was shocked. It smelled YUMMY! I lit it and was enamored! Over the course of three days, I burned it completely as it was a small tin to start with! While it seemed like such a trivial thing, I can't tell you what a joy it was to enjoy that candle's aroma and enjoy the finer things in life we have been holding onto!

May you enjoy something this week that you have been waiting for just the right moment!

-SS

P.S. If you're ever in Jamaica, look for the Sweet Jamaica Carribean Travel Candle in Island Vanilla and Nutmeg! It came with a little starfish soap on top too. Good stuff!

Swagbucks

Have you heard of swagbucks.com? It is a free search engine powered by Google and Ask.com. (I loved ask.com back when it started as askjeeves.com!) Every time you perform a search, you have a chance to win swagbucks. Once you have won enough swagbucks, you can redeem them for gift cards! I have only been on for 5 days and already have 11 swag bucks so in 4-5 weeks, I can get a $5 Amazon card just for normal web browsing! If you click the link below, you can register for free, get some bucks for registering, and you help me out! I've changed this to my home page and it's been easy for Walt and I to use!

Good Day!

Walt came home today after being in D.C. all week. We were blessed to have some of his travel per diem left so we went out to Famous Dave's (BBQ) for dinner. We have missed it so much! They are all over the nation including Omaha but not in Dallas! (closest is El Paso.) The closest location here is not too far from us...20 minutes.

We went online to check where our closest Culver's was to us (Our other favorite chain in Omaha) Suburbs around Dallas have Culver's but not convenient access to us.) Anyway, we knew there were two in the Phoenix area and I pulled it up and there is a third one coming soon...guess where??? Our suburb!!!! YAY!!!! Every week gets even better!

As far as good Phoenix eats, we're trying not to eat out too much and the only we love so far is In 'N Out Burger which we fell in love with 4 years ago in Vegas...the closest one is near the Famous Daves, about 20 minutes away.

This afternoon, we had a wonderful time at the design center for the house. Our free money went farther than we thought it would! Praise God! We have a relaxing weekend planned! What are your weekend plans?

The Contraction Master

This week, I have had three different announcements of babies coming this spring! It's only Tuesday!

Everyone knows at least someone who is pregnant and this is the coolest site I've seen this week:

The Contraction Master: Your free online assistant for timing contractions!
http://www.contractionmaster.com/

No registration needed. You just go to the top right, click on Start Timing Contractions, read the simple instruction, click continue and it is awesome! You just hit the space bar when the contractions start and stop. It records the beginning and end times, duration and frequency in a nice chart!

New site for templates

Many of my blogging friends have the coolest templates lately!

If you're interested, it's http://www.thecutestblogontheblock.com!

I will be checking it out shortly too!

Our New Home

Sorry for the delay. Here is our new house! It is a brand new 4 bed/2.5 bath two-story with an upstairs laundry room, loft and a downstairs den. We love it and are thanking God every day for his blessings: for finding it and the incredible price in a normally very expensive part of the country to live! Before finding our agent, we were told to plan on spending $300,000 for a nice place in a good area. We were told that there is no way you could find a non-foreclosed house this big under $200,000. With God all things are possible! We prayed for a house with more room for hospitality, Bible studies, and fellowship! Thank you, Lord! May we use it to bless You!

Pictures are below. You can jump to those and skip all the extra house details, if you wish! For those that are into the house stuff, we were so excited to find out that it comes with 2" white faux wood blinds, all appliances including refrigerator/washer/dryer, garage door opener installed, closing costs paid for, and a landscaping credit to design our own front yard (some actually have grass here in the desert but we'll be doing the rocks and plant zeroscape theme!)

Our relocation package includes our closing costs so they substituted a $6,000 credit to go to the design center! It already has $23,000 in upgrades and we are limited since the house is done. Some of the things we can add are ceiling fans, security system monitoring fees for two years, more cabinets, a desk for the little niche in the loft, some decor, and mounted TVs! (Walt is already thinking about watching football on them!) Our appointment at the design center is this Friday and we can't wait to see how we'll get to play with $6,000!

Some of the upgrades already in the house are ceramic tile in the entry way, walkways, kitchen, and downstairs bath, frieze carpet everywhere else, two-tone paint (a pretty light sage green on the walls), upgraded master bath package (oil-rubbed bronze faucets, towel bars, shower head, etc), cabinets, front door, 7 pre-wired fan boxes with double switches, fireplace, media niche. In addition to some nice standard things such as silver door levers (instead of brass doorknobs), pretty faucets and lights in guest bathrooms, and a light package that is oil-rubbed bronze throughout the whole house.

These pics don't do it justice. We are so excited! We love all the windows!

Front- Great porch area!

Back of house...great covered patio...it looks small but it's big enough for a table and chairs!

Formal dining and living room

Kitchen with super deep pantry on right and an island with double-sided storage!

Family Room with Media Niche. Large den on the far left...you can see part of the doorway.

Downstairs guest bath. Walt always wanted a pedestal sink!

Upstairs loft.

Upstairs...we love the cabinets and work space! Laundry room is not far on the left.

Upstairs guest bath...we love that it has double vanities too!

Master bath- double vanities with upgraded faucets.

Too dependent on the internet!

This weekend, our apartment complex's wi-fi went out and so I felt like I lost my right hand. I use recipes online (especially with my cookbooks in storage), read blogs to find great deals on my grocery shopping, keep up with friends on their blogs, MySpace, Facebook, and email as well as our blog. Plus I love to shop online (within our budget), write companies online and tell them if I like or don't like their product and why, read devotions online, research, etc. There were a couple unreliable connections in the area but so slow and spotty that you couldn't do much. On top of that, Walt left early Sunday morning for D.C. for a week so after church, I was looking around and thinking what now?? So I took that time and really tried to use it productively! I had the best workout in a long time both cardio and strength training. After that, I sat down and watched a couple things I had DVR'd and just relaxed. Today, I am back on the internet but plan to read and do some other non-addictive things!

Backing up to Saturday when the internet connection went out, it was wonderful to see God's provision in the little things. Walt hadn't looked up the directions to The Parking Spot here in Phoenix yet. In Dallas, we had it memorized. Well, on Friday night, we got THREE huge phone books at our doorstep and I chuckled thinking those are a waste of space because I have the internet. I brought them inside so no one would think we're out of town and I just put them right by the door...no plans for them...let them sit there for awhile. When the internet wasn't going to be my answer for directions, the idea popped in my head to use the phone books, enter the address into my GPS and write them down for Walt! I stopped and thought, "Wow, God, you provide so much for us. We have been here over three weeks and how amazing is it that you planned for these phone books to arrive the day before we lost internet use?" It worked great and he got there safe and sound. (He had the phone number too for backup.)

So the house pics and details are coming soon and now you know why I haven't put them up like I thought I would!

We loved it!

The movie was wonderful! The church that produces these movies (Sherwood Baptist in Albany, GA) keeps getting better and better! I don't want to give it away but definitely go see it when it comes out September 26th! I'll probably see it again and definitely get the DVD when it comes out in 4-5 months!

The movie is very inspiring and Walt said it made him want to be a better husband. I felt the same...to be a better wife, of course!

Oh, and as you can see in the trailer, there is a book called The Love Dare. This is a real book made from the director/producer of this movie that they said comes out Sept 28th but you can pre-order it now on Amazon.

The movie showed some of the dares in the book. It starts with for day one, do not say anything negative. Bite your tongue. The next day, repeat that dare and then do something unexpected. His wife liked coffee so he made and poured her coffee. Another day, he sent flowers. Then another day was to call just to see how they are doing...not to ask, remind, or inform them of anything...just ask how they are doing and if they need anything. Another day was to have a candlelit dinner...the actual dare might have been to prepare dinner but his co-worker tells him to go all out...candles, music, and good food...cooked or at least picked up from somewhere nice. He cleans up on different days totally unexpected and such. I won't give the whole movie away.

Never Leave Your Partner Behind

I am so excited. Tonight, we are going to see Fireproof, the new movie from the makers of Facing the Giants. It is out September 26th but our radio station is having a free sneak peak! Walt is coming back from Tucson and I'm picking him up and then we're going out to dinner and the movie! Walt gets paid a set per diem for meals for traveling so we'll be able to use the extra for our dinner tonight! A free date all around! I'm excited!

If you haven't heard about Fireproof, you can read the plot below and check out the site here. This is the third film by this church. Flywheel was the first and had a great message. Facing the Giants was amazing and I'm excited to see this next film. They keep getting better and better! Kirk Cameron is starring in it. I read an article about how he watched Facing the Giants 5 times with his family and called the makers and said he'd love to help in anyway with their next project. He spoke at Prestonwood last year and that was so cool to see Mike Seaver in the flesh! (He's doing awesome things for the Lord too, of course!)

I also watched an online video where the makers of this film actually created the book called, The Love Dare, which you will see in the movie. This movie will really touch a lot of people, I think and we could all benefit to take the 40 Day Love Dare! :) The book comes out the same day as the movie, September 26th

Here is the plot of Fireproof copied off the site:
At work, inside burning buildings, Capt. Caleb Holt lives by the old firefighter adage: Never leave your partner behind. At home, in the cooling embers of his marriage, he lives by his own rules. Growing up, Catherine Holt always dreamed of marrying a loving, brave firefighter...just like her daddy. Now, after seven years of marriage, Catherine wonders when she stopped being "good enough" for her husband. Regular arguments over jobs, finances, housework, and outside interests have readied them both to move on to something with more sparks. As the couple prepares to enter divorce proceedings, Caleb's father challenges his son to commit to a 40-day experiment: "The Love Dare." Wondering if it's even worth the effort, Caleb agrees-for his father's sake more than for his marriage. When Caleb discovers the book's daily challenges are tied into his parents' newfound faith, his already limited interest is further dampened. While trying to stay true to his promise, Caleb becomes frustrated time and again. He finally asks his father, "How am I supposed to show love to somebody who constantly rejects me?" When his father explains that this is the love Christ shows to us, Caleb makes a life-changing commitment to love God. And with God's help, he begins to understand what it means to truly love his wife. But is it too late to fireproof his marriage? His job is to rescue others. Now Caleb Holt is ready to face his toughest job ever ... rescuing his wife's heart.

The hunt begins!

Happy Labor Day!

We have been talking to an agent here about house shopping and yesterday, she offered to show us some houses today so Walt was very excited about that! After we looked at a couple listings she found in a neighborhood we would love to live in, I was excited too! We originally said we'd wait until Labor Day to start looking so it looks like we're right on schedule! :)

Saturday, August 30, 2008

It's started.

Walt has been so happy that college football kicked off on Thursday! Football season means I will have lots of extra free time to get stuff done. :) I follow the Huskers but that's it for college football.

Go HUSKERS! So glad they beat WMU 47-24! WAY TO GO!

It's the weekend again...YAY!

Our week was busy but nothing worth mentioning!

Friday was fun. Downtown Phoenix had a bad storm (category 1 hurricane-strength winds) and the power was out at Walt's work. He got the day off. We went and got his driver's license, our library cards, and a medical appt for Walt. It was such a blessing to not have to take leave/vacation for the driver's license and sick leave for the medical appt! Thank you, Lord! We were on our way to get his hair cut when the boss called and he had to go into work for the last two hours. As strange as it was for the short time, we were just thankful for the free time together and we got so much accomplished! It made the 3 day weekend even sweeter!

I will be taking pictures soon and getting caught up! Walt will be out of town Tues/Wed this week and Sunday-Friday next week. I'll relish keeping busy with that and a bunch of reading I've been waiting to do. One more car to register and I'll be good to go as far as settling in. Next, we'll be looking at houses in person rather than just online! We've found lots of good possibilities!!! We can't wait!

Friday, August 22, 2008

Yay for Friday!

I can't believe it's been 8 days...since I've blogged and we moved. We are loving Phoenix and have had a busy week with relocation stuff, installing stuff, doctor's appointments, getting set up with other doctors, going out to dinner with one of Walt's TX bosses who is here this week, and everything else! We are both exhausted! Looking forward to the weekend!

For the cat lovers: Everyday Grissom has to get into the laundry room. It's hilarious! One night while we were eating dinner, he was pawing at the door so I opened it a crack and then sat down like I hadn't done anything. Walt looked at me inquisitively and I told him that is Grissom's new thing on his kitty checklist: must search laundry room daily. He goes in for a minute or two, comes back out and goes about his day. Grissom is also fascinated our dining room table. They provided us with a round glass table and 4 chairs...Grissom loves being on a chair or the floor and looking up through the table and seeing us. It's hilarious. He always has his eye on us and this is one more way to make it easier...looking through the table instead of around the table.

We made it!

We were tired but we made it safe and sound! We got everything out of our cars by 4:45pm. (Phoenix time) Now Walt has a three day weekend before he starts work on Monday! Grissom has already explored everything in our apartment. He did great on the trip. He only meowed about 1.5 hours before we got to our new place. He's having fun exploring all the new windows.

We will be in our corporate apartment until November 30th. The VA gives us money for temporary housing and it will cover this beautiful 2 bedroom apartment that is in a normal apartment complex that opened last summer. We are on the second floor and have a view of the pool! Will write more later!

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Almost there!

This morning we got everything packed into our cars and on the road by 9am! We drove 10.5 hours to Las Cruces, NM, to stop for the night. We wanted to get to a new state and it took 650 miles and 10 hours to do it! Everything went so smoothly. Grissom did great in the car. Praise the Lord!

We'll be at our new place tomorrow! Wohoo!

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

It looks so pretty!

We got up early today to keep cleaning and get the bathrooms sparkly! Walt did a great job on them! I was in charge of the blinds and touch-up painting while he put in a lot of elbow grease!

The carpet cleaners came toward the end of their promised window of time and we were so grateful to the have that extra time. We got everything cleaned by the time they got there at 12:30pm and when they left, we took our recycled cans in, dropped off our donations, and mailed 3 media mail boxes to our corporate apartment so we could have a little more room in the cars!

The carpet looks fantastic and the owner couldn't believe the house was almost 4 years old!

We packed up one of the cars and then took the empty one to the hotel where we are now! We got here by 4:30pm and have a relaxing evening planned! We pray for a good night's sleep before we go back to the house one last time to get our kitty and a few electronics and things to pack in the last car!

Please pray for safe travels and we are so thankful for all of your friendships!!!!

Monday, August 11, 2008

One step closer to getting to Phoneix!

The packers/movers came today at 9am and were gone by 4:30pm! They did such a great job. There were three main packers and the driver packed a couple rooms too. We spent the night cleaning and touching up paint until we couldn't keep our eyes open anymore! We slept on air mattresses in our living room and it was a fun last night in our house!

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Work in progress

Today the emergency A/C repair man called in sick and they were behind the schedule. We stayed at the hotel until 11am. They were supposed to be here by noon and when they didn't show up or call, Walt walked down to see if our neighbor who works for the company could call in and find out what the deal was. The neighbor asked why we didn't come earlier and Walt told him he stopped by on Saturday night. Our neighbor came down and fixed it in less than 10 minutes! The inside of our house got up to 92 degrees and it took 12 hours for it to cool down. The forecast was 104 today.

We finished sorting what we wanted to take to temporary housing. Packers and movers will be here tomorrow!

Saturday, August 9, 2008

"Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot"

We had a pretty productive day around the house. I think we got more done than we imagined! (We're sorting and picking what we want to take to the apartment for 3 months and what will go to storage...it's hard to plan for 12 weeks!) Walt noticed around 5pm that our A/C wasn't being very efficient but it's summertime and it always struggles in the early evening. A short while later, Walt checked a vent and there was no cool air blowing. DOH! Thankfully, they will be here tomorrow morning before noon. If only it weren't Sunday and our last Sunday at Prestonwood no less!!! NO! :( (At least we can watch it online.)

Tonight, we are at a new hotel that has only been open for a year and thankfully this happened now and not when the packers come on Monday or when we're leaving on Wednesday! Also, we have a parts and service extended warranty and this won't cost a dime! (Things could be worse!)

Friday, August 8, 2008

Now I really need to get busy!

As much as I've learned to not make many plans lately, I planned our preparation for the next few days around the confirmation that the packers would be here on Monday and movers would come on Tuesday. (We leave on Wednesday.) Tonight, Walt comes home grinning ear to ear to tell me that after they surveyed the house, they're going to pack and move everything on Monday. He gave them the go ahead. Okay...new plan. :) (Unfortunately that was not my original reaction but after a good night's sleep, I realize it could work out better for us while we do stuff on Tuesday.)

For those of you who are sweet enough to send me/us emails, I'm sorry we haven't been as good at replying or emailing lately! I am grateful for this blog where I can put small updates here and there and keep you in the loop!

We got our apartment reserved last night and we'll be there for three months while looking for a house. YAY!

Thursday, August 7, 2008

SIX DAYS!

Today, we got our moving date! We will be leaving the Lone Star state on Wednesday- this Wednesday, August 13th! (I better get busy!)

What do you mean I look stressed????

Sad News

Please pray for my family. My uncle Dennis died this morning. This is my mom's younger brother. He was 49, the same age as her other brother, Jeff, when he died 18 months ago. (My mom is the oldest of the three.) They discovered that his heart was enlarged and twice the size of a normal heart. It was only a matter of time.

My mom and her brother recently sold their houses and their parents' house to move into a big house to share with their parents since they are getting older and need help. My grandparents and mom are taking it hard. Dennis was Grandma's baby even to this day. He never married or had children so thankfully there is no one left behind like when Jeff died.

Please pray for Walt and I as we are in the middle of dealing with relocation details and going out of town for the visitation and funeral.

We're on the website news!

While we didn't make the TV news, we made the website news!

It's 4 minutes long. It's fun to watch or you can fast-forward to the 1:12 minute mark to see us at the 1:15 mark for 5 seconds of us digging into our cheesecake and my cheesecake's closeup in the to go container! (They ran out of plates!)

Our Cheesecake Day!

We had a great night!

Wanting to beat normal dinner crowds, Walt went into work early today. We got to The Cheesecake Factory at 4:15pm. There were crowds of people waiting to be seated. We wanted to sit in the bar area to take advantage of the food specials during happy hour and it was completely full so we went ahead and put our name in for a table.

While waiting in line for a pager, the woman behind us said that she was willing to buy cheesecake to go at the regular price. (The $1.50 special was for dine-in guests only.) They told her it would be a 25 minute wait to get a slice TO GO!!! We get to the hostess stand and they quote us a 60-80 minute wait.

We take our pager, turn around, and walk through the tables one more time. We get towards the other end of the restaurant and there is a table that was occupied before but now is completely open! Someone had just left! (The bar sections are smoke-free here! YAY!)

We sit down, Walt returns the pager, order our food specials, and remembering what the woman in line told us, decide to order our cheesecake up front so it will arrive in time for dessert! It worked out perfectly!

We get our waters, our food including super fresh bread, and then our cheesecake. They were out of my favorite kind (fresh strawberry) so I venture into a new flavor. I have tried about 12 kinds in the past but keep coming back to fresh strawberry. I ordered fresh banana cream and it was delicious!

I'm enjoying the moment and Walt's digging into his latest favorite flavor, dulce de leche caramel, and the film crew from Channel 11 comes running up to film us eating cheesecake! They film us and tell us to pretend they're weren't there. (Easier said than done!) Then they interview Walt and take his name. They were with us for at least 5 minutes!!

We watched the news tonight and at the very very end, they have a 10 second plug about Cheesecake Day at the location we were at. (Arlington) The crew was there for a long time! None of our footage got used but it was fun! They reported that people waited up to 3 hours for a table! (We were there for only an hour and still got home in plenty of time for our hour walk!)

Thank you, Lord, for spoiling us tonight: no traffic each way, no wait for a table, food that was delicious and very affordable, a super sweet waitress, and a delicious flavor of cheesecake to add to my favorites!

Huge Praise: We just found out this morning from D.C. that the VA will buy our house and this means our relocation package details are complete! We can move to the next step and by this Friday, we should have dates for when the packers and movers are coming!

Praise the Lord!

Thank you for all of your prayers!

A little updated info about the Starbucks rewards card...the Starbucks rewards card is the same as a gift card. Just register any gift card online and you get lots of extra goodies. The special on July 25-26 was doubly good to us. I was able to order the Orange Banana Mango smoothie on the 26th for free. So we got 3 free drinks out of this promotion. (one coupon on Thursday for the future, one Banana Chocolate on Friday, and one Orange Banana Mango smoothie on Saturday!) When we went on Saturday for a little afternoon date, Walt just got a brewed coffee which they put half and half in and with the rewards card, you get a free shot of caramel syrup (or any other favorite flavor). It cost him $1.95 before tax and then with the card, you get a free refill with the caramel too! For a little more details about all the reward freebies, click here.

Three years

Today is our three-year anniversary as a Texas homeowner! We (or mostly I) always get sappy every year looking back on various anniversaries. Last night, three years ago, we arrived and wondered what life would have in store for us. Without being too dramatic, as I look back, we have had events beyond our wildest expectations and events beyond our greatest fears unfold before us. It's both inspiring and humbling as we see the path the Lord has laid before us. As tempting as it would be to have our life laid out like the LIFE game board, I am thankful that only a few steps of our journey revealed at a time.

We look forward to what life in Arizona will bring us!

P.S. On a silly note, regarding the happy events that Walt relishes from our stay here: For the record, I (Sarah) accurately predicted mid-season in 2005 that the Steelers would win the Super Bowl and Walt has never been too proud to admit I was right! I'm 3 for 3 for season predictions and last night, he was hounding me for this season's prediction. So much pressure!

Do you have a Starbucks rewards card?

Walt has cut back on his Starbucks purchases since finding RaceTrac's coffee that he likes for $1! He used to go to Starbucks every Friday morning as a treat and now he goes to RaceTrac instead. Once a month or so, he goes to Starbucks to indulge.

Today and tomorrow, Starbucks is giving you a free Vivanno beverage with your registered Starbucks card. They looked at me like I was crazy but I went, didn't purchase anything else, they swiped my registered card and it was FREE! Walt accidentally threw away the one he got as a gift and so he got another one for me with $5 on it so that I could have it for today. Last night, he asked about the promo this weekend and they looked at him like he was crazy but gave him a coupon for one to order on his next visit! (good through 9/30/08)

This morning, I followed him to our local Starbucks, he ordered his monthly treat off the card. Then I ordered my banana chocolate smoothie on a separate transaction. They were surprised it worked and it was free. Now I still have the free coupon for a later date! That was $5 well spent last night! Three drinks plus a little change left on the card.

The rewards card gives you other free stuff too. (I think it's on the web.) When he got the original gift card, you register online and they sent a postcard for a free drink.

The Lord waits on us!

Yesterday, I was going to post on here "STILL WAITING" with a big fat sigh but God's been working on me. To reinforce his point, last night, my dear Traci, emailed me a devotion that is too perfect...God is amazing. Thank you, Traci for sharing and encouraging me! (This is from my Nebraska Traci...I am blessed to have two wonderful Tracis in my life!)
**************************************
Isaiah 30:18 "therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you....blessed are all they that wait for him."

We should not only understand the importance of our waiting on God but also realize something even more wonderful - the Lord waits on us. And the very thought of His waiting on us will give us renewed motivation and inspiration to "wait for him". It will also provide inexpressible confidence that our waiting will never be in vain. Therefore, in the spirit of waiting on God, let us seek to discover exactly what it means right now.

The Lord has an inconceivably glorious purpose for each of His children. "If this is true," you ask, "why is it that He continues to wait longer and longer to offer His grace and to provide the help I seek, even after I have come and waited on Him?" He does so because He is a wise gardener who "waits for the land to yield its valuable crop" and is "patient....for the autumn and spring rains" (James 5:7). God knows He cannot gather the fruit until it is ripe, and He knows precisely when we are spiritually ready to receive blessings for our gain and His glory. And waiting in the sunshine of His love is what will ripen our soul for His blessings. Also, waiting under the clouds of trials is as important, for they will ultimately produce showers of blessings.

Rest assured that if God waits longer than we desire, it is simply to make the blessings doubly precious. Remember, He waited four thousand years, "but when the time had fully come, God sent His Son" (Gal 4:4). Our time is in His hands, and he will quickly avenge those He has chosen, swiftly coming to our support without ever delaying even on hour too long.

Free CD and great ministry!

A couple weeks ago, I was checking out church websites in the area of where we'll be moving and one click led to another and I found myself on a website for a free music CD! Not one to pass up something free, I signed up and today I got not one free CD but 10! So those from my Prestonwood class, I will be bringing the other 9 CDs to class this Sunday. If you're not in my Prestonwood class, use this site to order your own free copy. (www.rickgoad.com) If you get 10, please pass the other 9 on. This CD is an easy listening style Christian CD. Very worshipful!

Great info below of the ministry from their website:

Rick Goad Ministries was formed in August 2006 by Rick Goad. Though Rick was battling pancreatic cancer, he felt compelled to begin a ministry of encouragement and hope. He completed a CD, entitled My Miracle, not long before he passed from this earth on January 6, 2007. Rick knew this CD would bless so many who suffer from depression, despair, grief, or loneliness. This album is uniquely touched by God though a heart that was thirsting after Him. You have to hear it to appreciate Rick's talent and the relationship he shared with our Lord. His goal was to give 1 million copies away FREE! His wife, Jackie, keeps this vision alive by distributing her husband's CD. Tens of thousands have already been given away.

$1.50 Cheescake!

1978 was a good year. Many of my friends and myself were born and so was The Cheesecake Factory. In honor of their 30th birthday, on Wednesday, July 30th, all cheesecake slices are $1.50 each! These are the normal-sized pieces but only available to dine-in guests.

Mark your calendars!

Sarah's Original Bargain Tip of the Day: Want to know how to eat there for less than $12.90 before tax and tip on their birthday??? Go during happy hour (4p-6p), sit at the booths around the perimeter of the bar, order two of the many discounted appetizers including several for $4.95 or less and two pieces of cheesecake for $1.50 each! (It would be $10.90 before T&T if you order two $3.95 appetizers!) You have a great splurge and won't feel quite as stuffed to the gills! I love a bargain! We did this in AZ but without the $1.50 bargain! Thankfully, we had $30 in gift cards to help!

More info in case you're interested from CCF's website:
The Cheesecake Factory Serves Up a Delicious 30th Anniversary Celebration!
Celebrating “30 Delicious Years,” The Cheesecake Factory is serving up several sweet initiatives throughout 2008.

To kick-off the anniversary celebration and in commemoration of National Cheesecake Day on July 30th, 2008, The Cheesecake Factory restaurants will offer every delicious slice of its more than 30 varieties of cheesecake with a dollop of nostalgia by featuring all cheesecakes at $1.50 per slice, limit one per guest, on that day—as they were when the restaurant first opened in 1978.

In addition, a special, limited edition cheesecake, the 30th Anniversary Chocolate Cake Cheesecake, will be introduced on July 30th with $0.25 from the sale of each slice sold this year benefiting the national hunger-relief organization, America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network. Additional activities will be announced throughout the year.

Mirages and an oasis

In an attempt to keep our mind off of waiting for our relocation packet to be approved, I realized I haven't mentioned it in a month and have gotten a few emails wondering if we've moved yet!

We are still here! We got to spend 4th of July with our BF/SS class! YAY!

We are still waiting. The new relocation deal has been approved and now they have to go through the list of people who were approved for a promotion from 3/23-6/23. Unfortunately, Walt is one of those in this three month period. Normally, once you are officially approved for a promotion, it is lightening quick and in LESS than a week, you have your packing and moving dates all set up! It will be 9 weeks tomorrow since Walt was officially approved for promotion to AZ. (15 weeks since he was told he was selected but had to wait for official approval.)

We are patient (in more areas of our life than one) but we ask that you pray for us while we wait and that we can see the amazingness of having to wait so long. There are a couple areas of our lives that are on hold right now because we can't move and the stress of not having even a moving date is not helping.

After so long, you begin to wonder is this really is going to happen?? Walt is assured every week that he is coming to AZ or the new boss will come and get him! (ha ha!)

To make it seem a little more real, Walt suggested we go to AZ this weekend so we are taking a little road trip! We'll spend the first part of the weekend looking at some apartments and open houses just to get us excited and check out a few areas. Then early Sunday afternoon, we are checking into a resort in Scottsdale with gorgeous mountain views and relaxing for two days...just sunshine and rest. He proposed this as a combo exploratory trip/belated anniversary trip! Walt wants to stop by his new office one day while I'm at the pool. The icing on top is that the weather this weekend will be about 15 degrees cooler than it has been the last couple weeks! Perfect!

Excellent News!

I am so excited to be able to post that friends from Nebraska, Matt and Tori, have become parents!! Their baby boy, Nicholas John Clark, was born on Saturday night and he is 6 lbs, 11 oz and is 18" long!

It has been a whirlwind of a 24 hours for them as they just found out last night that they would be picking Nicholas up this morning in Iowa! Since the adoption is taking place in Iowa, they must keep the baby in the state until the court has released the baby (they've been told this could be 1 to 2 weeks). They are asking for a specific prayer request that all goes quickly and the baby is released by the courts by July 16th so they may join their families in St. Louis for a previously planned family weekend.

It has been a long journey and my heart jumps for joy knowing that your dream has come true! Congratulations!

A few photos from St. Pete

I take way too many pics while traveling...half the battle is going through them all and deciding which ones to post...instead of 100, here is 10. :)

After dinner on the Pier the first night.

Sunset on the Beach...
would have been pretty with the ducks but it was cloudy.

Best sunset that week...from the Pier

The gorgeous parks along the bay!

I love palm trees...thought this was pretty with the street light.

Some pictures taken while playing with my camera.

Flowers at check-in. I love white roses!

By the pool.

At a delicious Italian restaurant!

Sunrise on the plane ride home. A sweet ending.
